The Grammar Rule 

  • When: Used to join sentences related to Time.

  • Where: Used to join sentences related to Place.

  • Which: Used to join sentences related to Things or Animals.

  • Why: Used to join sentences related to a Reason.

Part 1: Joining with "When" (Time)

Question 1:

I will never forget that golden day. I won the first prize in the essay competition on that day.

Answer: I will never forget that golden day when I won the first prize in the essay competition.

Question 2:

The teacher entered the classroom. All the students immediately stopped talking.

Answer: All the students immediately stopped talking when the teacher entered the classroom.

Part 2: Joining with "Where" (Place)

Question 3:

This is the historical fort. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born here.

Answer: This is the historical fort where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born.

Question 4:

We visited the beautiful village in the Konkan. My grandfather lived there for fifty years.

Question 5: 

The student is looking for a quiet library. She can study peacefully for her board exams there.

Answer: The student is looking for a quiet library where she can study peacefully for her board exams.

Part 3: Joining with "Which" (Things / Animals)

Question 6:

I have lost the expensive pen. My elder sister gave it to me on my birthday.

Answer: I have lost the expensive pen which my elder sister gave me on my birthday.

Question 7:

The teacher taught us a new grammar rule today. It was very difficult to understand at first.

Answer: The teacher taught us a new grammar rule today, which was very difficult to understand at first.

Question 8:

Rohan bought a new science reference book. It contains five solved question papers.

Answer: Rohan bought a new science reference book which contains five solved question papers.

Part 4: Joining with "Why" (Reason)

Question 9:

The little girl was crying bitterly in the park. Nobody knew the reason for it.

Answer: Nobody knew the reason why the little girl was crying bitterly in the park.

Question 10:

The principal suddenly cancelled the annual sports day. He did not explain the reason to the students.

Answer: The principal did not explain the reason to the students why he suddenly cancelled the annual sports day.

    Answer: The guests arrived at our house when we were having our dinner.

  • She is wearing a beautiful traditional dress.

  • It is made of pure silk.
    Answer: She is wearing a beautiful traditional dress which is made of pure silk.

Question 19:

  • You look very sad and upset today.

  • Please tell me the reason for it.
    Answer: Please tell me the reason why you look very sad and upset today.

Question 20:

  • I kept my house keys somewhere safely.

  • I cannot remember the place now.
    Answer: I cannot remember the place where I kept my house keys safely.
