100 Root words with prefix and suffix list for SSC Board Exam Class 10 English Grammar Question 1B

In the SSC Board Activity Sheet, Question 1(B) often asks students to make new words by adding a prefix or suffix. This list covers the most common words asked in the exam.

Important Spelling Rules for Word Formation

1. Dropping the Silent 'e'

(Add text: When adding a suffix starting with a vowel, drop the 'e' at the end. Example: Nature + al = Natural.)

2. Changing 'y' to 'i'

(Add text: If a word ends in 'y', change it to 'i' before adding a suffix. Example: Happy + ness = Happiness.)

3. Doubling the Final Consonant

(Add text: Sometimes the last letter is doubled. Example: Run + er = Runner.)

4. Adding Prefixes (No Change Rule)

When you add a prefix (like un-, dis-, mis-, ir-) to a root word, the spelling of the root word usually does not change. Even if this results in double letters, keep both.

  • Mis + spell = Misspell (Double 's')

  • Ir + regular = Irregular (Double 'r')

  • Un + necessary = Unnecessary (Double 'n')

  • Dis + appear = Disappear (One's, two 'p's)

5. The Silent 'e' Rule

This is one of the most important rules for suffixes.

  • Drop the 'e': If the suffix begins with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u, y), drop the 'e' at the end of the root word.

    • Write + ing = Writing

    • Nature + al = Natural

    • Create + ion = Creation

  • Keep the 'e': If the suffix begins with a consonant (like -ly, -----ment, -ful), keep the 'e'.

    • Hope + ful = Hopeful

    • Manage + ment = Management

    • Late + ly = Lately

6. The 'Y' Rule (Consonant vs. Vowel)

  • Change 'y' to 'i': If a word ends in a Consonant + y, change the 'y ' to 'i ' before adding the suffix (unless the suffix is -ing).

    • Happy + ness = Happiness

    • Carry + ed = Carried

    • Beauty + ful = Beautiful

    • (Exception: Carry + ing = Carrying)

  • Keep the 'y': If a word ends in a Vowel + y (ay, ey, oy), do not change the 'y'.

    • Play + ed = Played

    • Enjoy + ment = Enjoyment

7. The Doubling Rule (CVC Rule)

Double the last letter of the root word if it satisfies these conditions:

  1. The word ends in CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant).

  2. The suffix begins with a vowel.

  • Run + er = Runner (r-u-n is CVC)

  • Big + est = Biggest

  • Sad + est = Saddest

  • Begin + er = Beginner

8. The 'Full' Rule

When the word "Full" is added as a suffix to another word, the second 'l' is always dropped.

  • Beauty + full = Beautiful (Not Beautifull)

  • Use + full = Useful

  • Faith + full = Faithful

9. Keeping 'e' for Soft sounds (CE and GE)

If a word ends in -ce or -ge, keep the 'e' when adding suffixes like -able or -ous to keep the sound soft (like 's' or 'j').

  • Courage + ous = Courageous (Keeps the 'j' sound)

  • Change + able = Changeable

  • Notice + able = Noticeable

Note: In the exam, you usually only need to write one (either prefix or suffix), but knowing both helps.
