Master Q.4(D) Film Review: Format, Vocabulary & 3 Solved Examples (HSC 12th Board)

How to Write

A Perfect Film/Book Review

for

Class 12 Board Exam

In Section III (Writing Skills) of the HSC English Paper, Question 4 (D) offers you a choice between Film Review, Blog Writing, and Appeal. Among these, Film Review is the most popular choice because it follows a fixed structure. If you know the plot of one good movie and a few technical terms, you can easily score 3.5 to 4 marks.

In this guide, we will break down the perfect format, give you a list of "Power Words," and provide some Model Answers that you can memorise for the exam.

The Marking Scheme (4 Marks)

  • Presentation of Theme/Story: 2 Marks

  • Technical Aspects (Music/Direction): 1 Mark

  • Overall Presentation (Language): 1 Mark

The 4-Step Structure

Do not write one long, boring paragraph. Divide your answer into these 4 parts:

  1. Introduction: Name of the movie, Year, Director, Producer, Genre.

  2. Cast & Storyline: Main actors and a brief summary of the plot (don't reveal the suspense!).

  3. Technical Aspects: Discuss Music, Cinematography (Camera work), Direction, and Editing.

  4. Opinion: Your final verdict and star rating.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Don't tell the whole story: The examiners don't want a summary; they want a review. Keep the plot to 2-3 lines max.
  • Don't forget the Technicals: Many students fail to mention Music or Director. These are mentioned in the question paper points, so they carry marks.
  • Don't use "I": Except in the last paragraph (Opinion), try to write in a general tone (e.g., "The movie portrays..." instead of "I liked the scene...").

Final Tip for Students:

  • Do not change the Director's name. (Examiners know that Rajkumar Hirani directed 3 Idiots. If you write "Christopher Nolan," you will lose marks.
  • Keep the "Opinion" positive. Negative reviews are harder to write convincingly. Just say you loved it.
  • When writing your review, ensure you use the Headings (Introduction, Story, etc.). This makes your paper look neat and helps the examiner check your points quickly. Even if the question doesn't explicitly ask for headings, using them guarantees better presentation marks.
