Kinds of sentences
There are five kinds of sentences.
- Assertive sentence
- Interrogative sentence
- Imperative sentence
- Exclamatory sentence
- Optative sentence
Assertive sentence -
Assertive sentence is also called declarative sentence or statement. It states some fact. It ends with a full stop.
He is a clever boy.
Ram is a rich man.
Interrogative sentence -
Interrogative sentence is the sentence which asks a question. It often begins with a helping verb or with a wh-word.
Where are you going?
Are you crazy?
Imperative sentence -
The imperative sentence is a sentence which expresses order, instruction, advice, suggestion or warning etc.
Generally, imperative sentence begins with action verb, and if negative, it begins with 'Don't'.
The sentence beginning with 'Let' or 'Let's' is also an Imperative sentence.
E.g. come here.
Don't drink wine anymore.
Let me know about your friends.
Let's go in the library to study seriously. etc.
Exclamatory sentence -
A sentence which expresses a strong emotion. It often ends with a n exclamatory mark(!). But any sentence with exclamatory mark is not an exclamatory sentence. It can be assertive or imperative also according to the structure.
What a lovely drink!
So sweet!
Optative sentence -
A sentence which expresses a wish is an optative sentence.
E.g. May God bless you!
May you be blessed with health and happiness!
