Direct to indirect speech
Interrogative Sentences
There are two types of questions
- WH questions
- verbal questions.
While changing interrogative sentences from direct speech to indirect speech we have to
Follow the following rules:
Reporting verb - ask is used
- (enquire, question, demand, etc. can also be used.)
- Connective - if/ whether is used for verbal questions.
- In questions introduced by WH question words (who, what, how, when, which, where, why, etc.), this word serves as a link (connective) between the reporting verb and the reported question. No other conjunction is used with them.
- For reporting a question it is changed into a simple statement(assertive sentence). Show the question mark is dropped.
- Tenses, pronouns, possessive adjectives, possessive pronouns undergo the changes as per rule.
- You should not add change the meaning of all about any important part of the direct switch statement while converting it into the indirect.
