Conditional sentences

Conditional sentences

Conditional sentences are used to guess about
  • The general truths/facts
  • what could happen,
  • what might have happened,
  • and what we wish to happen.
 In English, most sentences using the conditional sense contain the word 'if'.
 There are four main ways of constructing conditional sentences in English. In all cases, these sentences are made up of an if clause and a main clause.

Conditional sentence type Usage Verb in if clause Verb in main clause
Zero General truths Vi(simple present) Vi (simple present)
Type 1 A possible condition and a probable result Vi(simple present) Shall/will + vi (simple future)
Type 2 A hypothetical condition and it's probable result V2(simple past) Would+Vi
Type 3 An unreal past condition and its probable result in the past Had+ V3(past perfect) Would have+V1

In many negative conditional sentences, there is an equivalent sentence construction using "unless" instead of "if".

Note properly

Unless = if not
If = unless.....not
